Committed to making the college experience accessible to everyone, we work to design barrier-free environments and provide accommodations when barriers cannot be removed.

About

Collaborating with faculty, staff, and students, the North Carolina Community College System employs its expertise at the intersection of disability and design. Our work focuses on ensuring that physical, curricular, and online environments are designed to be as barrier-free as possible. When barriers cannot be removed in a timely manner, we work directly with students to develop and implement appropriate accommodations.

What is a disability?

Any mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities can be described as a disability. Affected activities include walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, caring for oneself, or performing manual tasks. Other medical conditions, such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Tourette’s syndrome, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, AIDS, diabetes, cancer, psychiatric disorders, and multiple sclerosis may also be described as disabilities. Please bear in mind that no list can cover all possible disabilities. To explore whether a condition not listed here is a disability, please contact a Disability Services Provider at your community college.
