Statements from System President Jeff Cox, Board Chairman Tom Looney on Hurricane Helene’s Impact on Western North Carolina
Below is the statement from North Carolina Community College System President Jeff Cox on the damage and aftermath of Hurricane Helene:
“In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation across many of our western counties, the North Carolina Community College System stands in full support of our colleges, their students, and the communities they serve. The aftermath of this storm has brought considerable challenges, and our thoughts are with everyone affected.
Our primary focus at this time is on the immediate response to the disaster, ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and the communities around our colleges. We have been in direct communication with state emergency management officials, the Governor’s office, and the leadership of the General Assembly to coordinate efforts and mobilize resources.
Presidents from across our System have already reached out offering their support, demonstrating the true strength of our community. These perilous moments remind us how blessed we are to be 58 Strong.
As we move from immediate response to recovery, damage assessments will be conducted once conditions allow. While the situation is ongoing, we understand that priorities must remain focused on ensuring safety and managing the emergency at hand. In the coming days, we will begin gathering information on the extent of the damages to coordinate with FEMA and state agencies to support recovery efforts.
Our commitment is unwavering: we are here to advocate for and support our community colleges and the communities they serve. Together, we will navigate these difficult times and work towards rebuilding and recovery.”
